Cedar Avenue Junction

Scheme: Cedar Avenue junction with Rocky Lane

Type: Community Highway Scheme (CHS)

Road: Cedar Avenue and Rocky Lane, Haywards Heath District: Ansty and Staplefield, and Haywards Heath

WSCC Local Member: Cllr Sujan Wickremaratchi

Cabinet Member: Cllr Joy Dennis

Summary Date: 5th May 2026 to 29th May 2026

Overview of Proposed Works: West Sussex County Council, in collaboration with its contractor Landbuild Ltd, is undertaking improvement works at the junction of Cedar Avenue and Rocky Lane to improve safety for all road users and pedestrians.

The junction of Cedar Avenue and Rocky Lane is being redesigned to include a new overrun area, helping to improve sightlines and reduce potential conflict between vehicles and pedestrians. This will also create a safer, more clearly defined crossing point for people moving through the area.

To enable these improvements, the existing footpaths will be shifted slightly, providing the necessary space for the overrun area to be constructed without narrowing the route for pedestrians.

As part of the revised layout, double yellow lines will also be introduced to support visibility, reduce inappropriate parking, and ensure that the junction can operate safely and effectively once the changes are in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Will any roads have to be closed during the works? A. A full road closure is not planned to carry out these works. Access will be maintained at all times during construction with delays foreseen for the duration of the programme.

Q. What time of day will the work take place?

A. Where possible, works will take place between 07:30 and 17:30 Monday - Friday. Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be erected in advance on 21st April 2026.

Q. What disruption can motorists / pedestrians expect?

A. Access to properties and businesses will remain in place throughout the works. Delays to journey times are anticipated.

Q. Why are you undertaking the works during the day?

A. Daytime working is the most efficient and effective approach. We cannot carry out work of this nature without significant impact on the local community but take many factors into consideration. These include:

• The disturbance that our works will have on residents, especially at night.

• The safety of our workforce, the community, and the wider travelling public.

• Quality control.

We cannot carry out these works without generating noise and in order to ensure that we do not unduly disrupt nearby residents’ sleep, we have little alternative but to carry out as much of this work as we can during the day.

Q. Could weather impact the proposed works?

A. Weather conditions can have an impact on the scheme’s delivery, particularly during periods of inclement weather.

Q. How do I report a fault or problem on the highway?

A. The most effective way to report a fault or problem on the highway is to use our online reporting application with multiple options.
